The history of Vancouver’s architecture has been one that has had an abrupt “second” start due to the “Great Fire of Vancouver” which took place in June 1886... the same year that The Granville Townsite was incorporated as the City of Vancouver… it only took  3.5 hours for the fire to level the city leaving only a few buildings.  One of those buildings was the Hastings Mill(originally named “Stamps Mill”, built in 1865 by Edward Stamps... which can still be visited at its final resting location after being loaded on a barge in 1932 and floated to the North Foot of Alma Street…from its original location at the North Foot of Dunlevy Street... East of Gastown... the building is also a museum of  unique historical artifacts.

Since the fire the buildings that have been built in Vancouver range from Victorian and Edwardian in the late 1800’s, Romanesque warehouses in Gastown, Beaux-art office blocks, Neo-classical railway stations and Greek and Roman styled banks populated the city during this time.

There was a brief Art Deco design period in the late 1920’s... the Marine Buildingone that really represents this design of this period.

Following the two Word War’s, the city embraced designers like Frank Lloyd Wright, Bing Wong Tom, Ronald James Thomand Arthur Ericksonhave  made their influences present throughout Vancouver from buildings that have been designed by them or were influenced by them.
